STORAGE CONDITIONS: Stored in their original box in my Aristocrat Mini cabinet humidor, these cigars are kept in an environment set at 69%RH and has a summertime temperature of between 68-74 degrees F.
The “new” packaging is impressive from the piano-colored box with Camacho medallion, to the silver bands: one around the torso of the cigar and the other around the foot. This is currently the most expensive of Camacho’s cigars. This is the first in a series of reviews on this batch of cigars, which have been in my humidor for one month.
TASTING NOTES: The Camacho Triple Maduro is a new concept that has been a long time in development. It took nearly a full year working with five different maduro varieties. The biggest challenge was to get these thick, resiny leaves to burn and taste right together.
Even Camacho president Christian Eiroa had his doubts. He noted that he had some trouble with “blending three dark tobaccos, which shouldn’t be together” and yet he was finally able to produce a cigar with the flavor characteristics that he desired.
All the binder, filler and wrapper tobacco used for the Triple Maduro brand is from maduro leaf that is grown on the company farm in the Jamastrán Valley in Honduras.
The wrapper is course and nearly black in appearance, though there are some inter-batch variations noted. The wrapper is neither conspicuously oily nor dry. There is one “suture” vein at the head, which disappears behind the band. There is a tantalizing sweet hay aroma on the wrapper leaf and in the filler.
The cigar is firm to the touch, but a bit soft at the foot, we’ll see if that portends any ill effects. With that, I am done with my prelight inspection and ready to clip and light, which I do, using a Palió cutter and a Zippo/Z-Plus lighter, respectively.
The flavors of this cigar are deep and rich from the get go. Lip-smacking, savory characters coat the palate like velvet. The flavors are earthy, with coffee, wood and cocoa dominating.
Though there have been reports of a tight draw and a difficult burn with the Triple Maduro, I did not experience this at all. This cigar had a great draw and burned evenly throughout.
I was impressed with the long and pleasant finish. There was a deep espresso flavor on the finish that was distinctly inviting. The cigar was medium-bodied during the first half and medium-full body and flavor in the second half.
Though this is a pricey cigar, I would recommend that you try one if you like maduros. This is a juicy and yummy cigar.
