Antigua Guatemala is a city of consummate charm. From the cobblestone streets and brightly colored buildings to the cultural ethos and friendly people, Antigua is the perfect place for romance, sightseeing, shopping, and, of course, seeking out a fine cigar and a libation to go with it.
On my most recent trip to Antigua, I found just the perfect place; it’s called Bacchus and it’s a Wine, Cigar and Martini Bar, nestled in the heart of this beautiful colonial town.
Owned by Charlene Arrillaga, Bacchus is the best location that I have found in Antigua to sit and enjoy a cigar and a drink, and even an appetizer. The shop is long and narrow with a 30 foot high ceiling with stone construction of the walls and flooring. The doors open at the front and back to allow a welcome breeze in this tropical climate.
Charlene is a native of Washington D.C. and moved to Antigua nearly two and a half years ago to improve her Spanish language skills and discover and experience the challenges and joys of living abroad.
This past week, I have visited Bacchus a few times and smoked a couple of cigars and started working my way through Charlene’s list of Martini’s. The cigars in her shop are provided by the Antigua Tobacco Compañia, which is the largest importer of fine cigars in Guatemala. There are plenty of choices for cigars. You will find many fine cigars from Panama, Honduras, Nicaragua and even Guatemala. Of course, you will also find a great selection of Cuban cigars.
If your travels ever take you to Antigua, and I hope they do, be sure to visit Bacchus... and tell Charlene that the Doc sent you.
