DESCRIPTION: The Guapo is blended with an all Nicaraguan filler and binder, but it’s distinctive feature is a Sun Grown Ecuadorian wrapper. Regular Cabaiguán wrappers are light, golden brown leaves also grown in Ecuador, but the wrappers on the Guapo are considerably darker.

The cigar is hefty at 54 ring gauge and 5.6 inches in length. A yellow ribbon circles the wheel of 20 cigars, which is then wrapped in wax paper and packaged in a standard hinged box with a lacquered top. The cigar, which retails for $11, is a one-time production run of 50,000. “When it’s done, it’s done,” said Tatuaje owner Pete Johnson.

Cabaiguán cigars have traditionally been manufactured in Don Pepin’s Miami Factory, El Rey de Los Habanos. However, recently Johnson and Pepin have considered moving the manufacturing for the brand to Nicaragua, where Don Pepin has a newer and bigger factory named Tabacalera Cubana.

Johnson and Pepin are currently testing the feasibility and quality control of such a move with the creation of a new cigar: the limited edition Cabaiguán Guapo, which is our featured cigar of the week.

LIBATION OF THE DAY:

Vintage Rye: 21 year-old rye whiskey. Up until the last 10 years or so, the preferences for whiskey in North America have favored the blended bourbon variety, which is lighter in body and more palatable to the average whiskey drinker. Though Rye has slipped in popularity, it is certainly making a comeback in recent years.
