Camacho | Tasting Notes
I would like to point out that, recently, Camacho debuted a new cigar called... the Scorpion. This is a bit confusing because it is not the same cigar as the one I'm reviewing, which was an experimental, small batch cigar. Though you would be easily fooled, because the new Scorpion sports the same band, packaging and the same name. However, the wrapper and blend will be slightly different and the new cigar will not have nearly the age as these original Scorpions. The new Scorpions are likely to be a fine cigar, but I just want to be clear that they are not be the SAME cigar as this original Scorpion.
The Camacho Scorpion is a limited edition cigar that is currently being sold in only two places in the U.S. Many Stogie Fresh readers have purchased their sticks at Shades of Havana, a Pheonix shop run by my buddy Sean Parkinson. I featured these sticks on my Stogie Fresh 5 cigarcast in Episode 88 on October 28, 2007. The Scorpion's Chestnut brown wrapper comes from the Quinto Corte, which refers to the 5th priming, or the top leaves of the tobacco plant. The leaves at the top of the plant are thicker and contain more resins and, thus, more flavor and strength. The original Scorpion shipped with about 4 years of age on the tobacco prior to distribution. With nearly another year and a half in my own humidor, this cigar has some serious age. In my previous reviews, this cigar displayed a predictably nutty flavor, with a smoky hint of mesquite and a tangy aftertaste. This time was much the same. There was also a herbaceous aftertaste that may have been due to over-puffing the cigar. "Purging" the cigar (blowing through the cigar while applying a light to the foot) burned off some of the noxious chemicals and brought back a level of sweetness to the smoke. I have experienced consistent burn issues with several of the cigars in this batch, enough to where I have had to make special note of construction as an "issue." This cigar also had burn issues and even after smoking two cigars for this review, I had burn issues with both smokes. When this cigar burns well, it is an awesome smoke. Too bad there are so many cigars that haven't burned well. I don't know what to attribute this to: just an observation. I continue to recommend this cigar be paired with a single barrel bourbon or single malt scotch. I recommend the libation neat, or with a single ice cube. I recommend this cigar highly, if you can find them. Try Shades of Havana cigar shop in AZ. AGING POTENTIAL SCORE: B = this cigar should age well over the first 5 years and is likely to develop further complexity and nuances ~Doc Storage Conditions
These smokes have been stored in their original box inside a Cabinet humidor set at 69%RH. I moved them from my Aristocrat cabinet humidor, which also had an RH% set at 69%. I am always moving boxes around my three cabinets, for one reason or another.
The temperature these past 6 months has been warm and has ranged between 68-74 degrees F. This is the fourth and final review in the cycle on this special edition stick from the Camacho company. The cigars have been resting a total of 1 yr, 5.6 months. |
